PHC nursery is the largest plug plant nursery in the Southern Hemisphere, supplying strawberry plants to growers across Southern Africa. PHC also supplies our in-house berry producer Garden of Eden Berries who export majority of their produce to the Middle East.
We cultivate a combination of Infra-short day and day neutral varieties, assisting growers to extend their harvest period as well as enabling new growers to enter the industry.
Variety selection is dependant on climate, weather, day length, hight above sea level and desired berry attributes.
PHC nursery has an altitude of 270m, resulting in an ideal frost and hail free climate perfect for growing strawberry plug plants. Commercial strawberry growers strive to have the best plants in the world, giving them the edge a far as quality and yield is concerned. The production of strawberry plants requires very exact scientific skills. Our team is headed by Dr. Gavin Linsley-Noakes, who has a PHD in Horticulture and is assisted by a team of 4 Senior Graduate managers, all with BSc degrees.
There are more than 100 distinct strawberries species, 7 of which we cultivate. Our strawberry varieties are either Infra-short day (June-bearing) or day-neutral. Infra-short day varieties typically produce the largest strawberries whereas day-neutral varieties typically produce the highest volumes of strawberries.
Strawberry varieties are further classified into Early Season, Midseason, and Late Season. By selecting strawberry plant varieties that produce during different times of the season, growers are able to prolong the harvest period.
