OUR NURSERY
PHC was founded in 2004 by Dr Gavin Linsley-Noakes. Two decades later, it is the country’s largest strawberry plug plant nursery — producing over 20 million plants each season and supplying commercial growers across Southern Africa.
FARMING 365 DAYS
OF THE YEAR
Strawberry farming follows an annual cycle that begins with the replanting of new plants each and every season to ensure optimal yields and fruit quality. So how does it all work?
1. THE MOTHER PLANT
Selected for genetic integrity and disease-free status. Each produces first-generation daughter plants through managed runner propagation.
2. DAUGHTER PLANTS
Grown in our foundation houses and hanging nursery system — maximising runner production while minimising disease pressure.
3. PLUG PLANTS
Fourth-generation runners are transplanted into propagation trays to develop strong root systems critical to successful field establishment.
Scale & Reach
Plant deliveries are concentrated between March and June, aligned to grower planting schedules across the region — with supply available year-round for growers with different seasonal requirements.
Access to PHC plant material means access to the best available genetics, the most rigorous propagation standards, and the support of a team that grows the fruit itself.
Tissue Culture &
Quarantine Lab
Our certified quarantine and tissue culture laboratory is one of a very small number on the continent. It allows us to import elite variety material directly from leading breeding programmes in the EU and US — evaluated under full phytosanitary conditions before entering our propagation system.
The result: our growers access varieties previously unavailable in South Africa, selected by a team that understands local conditions from the inside.
Raspberry & Blackberry Development
Under Dr Linda Meyer, we are evaluating exciting new raspberry and blackberry varieties in our nursery — sourced directly from Europe and the United States. Field trials are planned for the second half of 2026, with the programme scaling in the years ahead.
